While you're prepping the buffet and enjoying the holiday decorations, it's a great idea to step back for just a minute to make sure your pup's health and safety have also been considered. A sick dog puts an instant damper on the festivities and nobody wants their furry friend to require medical attention. Check out our list of some common holiday treats and decor that could be hazardous for Fido and how you can still enjoy your festivities without banning these goodies!
FOOD FIASCOS FOR FIDO:
DECOR DANGERS FOR DOGS:
- Like to decorate with plants? They make a home look so inviting, but keep in mind that holly can upset Fido's stomach or be deadly if ingested. Mistletoe also messes with dog bellies and can cause heart collapse, while poinsettias can cause mouth blisters and stomach upset if touched by dog lips. You don't have to throw out these plants, just make sure they're out of pup's reach.
- Maybe you love the flickering ambience of candles. Since a flame is required for the flickering, don't leave the candles burning unsupervised and make sure they aren't placed where a curious pet might be able to investigate up close and personal.
- Prefer to scent your season? Keep in mind that potpourri contains oils that can be toxic to dogs if they decide they look like a tasty snack, so make sure they are not within dog snacking range.
